Obituary for Gary Dean Schons

Gary Dean Schons, 71, of Windom, Minn, formerly of Waterloo, died Wednesday, April 26, in Windom, Minn.

He was born October 29, 1945, in Waterloo, the son of Gerald W. and Marlys A. Hasbrook Schons. He married Rosemary Pasley in 1976 in Waterloo and they were later divorced.
Gary graduated from Don Bosco High School in Gilbertville and from the University of Northern Iowa. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was employed with Rath Packing Company and John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo. In 1985, he moved to Windom, Minn and was employed with Toro Manufacturing as a Plant Manager, retiring in 2007. He was a member of the Lions Club and the American Legion in Windom, Minn.

Survivors include: his daughter, Kelly Hayenga of Windom, Minn; two step-daughters, Lorie (Steve) Noe of Madison, Ala, and Sandie Smith of Cedar Falls; like a son to Gary, Matt Janssen of Windom, MInn; a step-granddaughter; four step-grandsons; a step-great grandson; four siblings, Diane (Jim) Christopher of Waterloo, Dick (Marilyn) Schons of Waterloo, Janelle (Ron) Peeler of Bowling Green, KY, and Annette (Steve) Thompson of Arroya Grande, Calif, a step-sister, Leslie Breakenridge of Hudson; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Preceded in death by: his parents; his step-mother, Elena Olson Schons; his step-brother, Gary (Nancy) Olson and his step-sister, Connie Olson.

Services: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, at St. Mary’s of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery, both in Eagle Center. Full military rites will be conducted by the Gilbertville American Legion Nugent Demuth Post 714, assisted by the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Public visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday at LaCanne Family Funeral Home in Windom, Minn; visitation will also be from 4-7 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to services Tuesday at St. Mary’s of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Eagle Center. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street is in charge of local arrangements.

Memorials: may be directed to the American Heart Association or the American Veteran’s Association.

Gary enjoyed golfing, dancing, being with friends and family and attending his daughter’s sporting events.
