Obituary for Helen M. Praska

Helen M. Praska, 89, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, May 3, at home from complications of breast cancer.

She was born September 26, 1927 in Pine Island, Minnesota, daughter of Leonard and Blanche Morrow Webb. She married William E. Praska on August 28, 1948 in New Hampton. He died November 22, 2006.

Helen graduated from Mantorville, Minnesota High School and Gates College. She was a legislative secretary at the Iowa Capital in Des Moines begining in 1946 and was employed with Waterloo John Deere Tractor Works beginning in 1951. She returned to work at Hawkeye Institute of Technology in 1981, after raising her family. She was very active with local elections in Waterloo for many years.

Helen's greatest blessing in life were her children and grandchildren. She always put others first and had a heart of gold. Passions were watching birds in her backyard, especially cardinals. She loved reading, going to Northern Minnesota with family, watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. She should have been a contestant.

Survivors include: a son, Gary (Carol Schlutz) Praska of Waterloo; three daughters, Susan (Mike) Cooper of Waterloo, Julie Vancil of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Sandra (Don) Struebing of Indianola; four grandchildren, Mikayla and Morgan Struebing and Bryce and Kimberly Dengler; a great grandson, Isaak Dengler; five step grandchildren; 13 step great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Darlene Webb of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by: two brothers, Charles in infancy and Dewayne; and a sister, Virginia Dietz.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation will continue at the church for one hour before services on Monday.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Hope Lodge in Iowa City.
