Obituary for John M. Katalinich

John M. Katalinich, 85, of Waterloo, died Sunday, April 22 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.

He was born May 24, 1932 in Waterloo, son of Anton and Manda Vrban Katalinich. He married Sherry Swanson in July of 1959. They were later divorced. He later married Jane Schmidt on January 16, 1967 in Omaha, Nebraska.

John graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1950. He was a veteran of the United States Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. After his service he worked at Rath Packing Company and later in sales, retiring in 1994 from Smitty’s Tire & Appliance in Cedar Falls.

Survived by: his wife of 51 years; four daughters, Brenda Katalinich of Clear Lake, Jonna (Don) Radtke of Omaha, Nebraska, Lisa (James) Osby of Cedar Rapids and Karmin (Dennis) Fernau of Waterloo; one son, Scott Schmidt of Cedar Falls; nine grandchildren, Alex, Kate, Abigail Fernau, Natalie Carrion, Collin Osby, Christian (Keely) Osby, Cole Schmidt, Stephanie (Jason) Fjeld and Jennifer (Andrew) Studer; five great grandchildren, Skylar Fjeld, Christopher and Carson Laffey, Nathan Mayer and Kane Osby; one brother Frank (Dorothy) Katalinich of Springfield, Ill; three sisters, Mary Ann (Bill) Seaver of Milan, Ill, Katherine Gillpatrick of Ralston, Neb., and Irene (Bill) Robert of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by: his parents; three brothers, Steve, Daniel and Joseph Katalinich.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 27, at St. Edwards Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Evasndale Amvets Post 31, Waterloo Amvets Post 19 and the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Public visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 26, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation will continue for one hour before services at the church on Friday.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or the Newell Post.

John’s passion was his family. He was an avid golfer and bowler. He was inducted into the Waterloo Bowling Hall of Fame and was a lifetime member of the Waterloo Bowling Hall of Fame.
