Obituary for Raphael W. Bovy

Raphael W. Bovy, 85, was given to the angels on Thursday, September 14 after fighting cancer. He went peacefully surrounded by family.

He was born September 21, 1931 in Waterloo, son of Albert and Loretta Schmitz Bovy. He married Mardeen Tille, May 25, 1954 in Eagle Center.

Raphael farmed in the Vinton area and later in the Eagle Center area. He also was employed with Rath Packing Company and later with John Deere. He was a US Army veteran serving in the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Mardeen; three sons, John (Barbara) Bovy of Buckingham, Albert (Denise) Bovy of Reinbeck and David (April) Bovy of Parkersburg; five daughters, LaRae (Randy) Steimel of Waterloo, Cathy (Dave) Henke of Voorhies, Marilyn (Trish Kinley) Wester of Cedar Falls, Roberta (Mike) McCarthy of Waterloo and Karen (Steve) DeSerano of Cedar Falls; 24 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Joe (Colleen) Bovy of Fairbank; two sisters, Joan (Dick) Reiter of Waterloo, Alberta (Jim) Keough of Cedar Falls and a brother-in-law, Marv (Betty) Lund of Waterloo. Also his beloved German Shepherd, Barrett.

Preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Mike McCarthy; a sister, Betty Lund and a brother-in-law, Jim Keough.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 19 at St. Mary’s of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Eagle Center with burial in the church cemetery where full military rites will be conducted by Gilbertville American Legion Nugent Demuth Post 714 and the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Public visitation will be from 3-8 pm Monday, September 18 at St. Mary’s of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, where there will be a 4 pm rosary. Visitation will continue for an hour before services at the church on Tuesday. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Ray had a passion for restoring Farmall tractors, and participating in tractor rides. He loved sitting on his swing, watching the birds, being with family and taking Barrett for runs on the 4 wheeler, while checking out the crops. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
