Obituary for Raymond "Bert" McGuire

Raymond T. “Bert” McGuire, 94 of Waterloo, died Monday, July 9 at the Martin Center of the Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls.

He was born July 26, 1923 on his family farm in Dunkerton, the son of Edward and Marguerita Harn McGuire. He married Eileen Kay Welter on July 22, 1947 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Waterloo. She died March 27, 2013.

Bert was a veteran of the United States Army, serving as a Platoon Sargent in the European Theater during World War II. After his service, he became employed with Rath Packing, he worked there for 20 years until moving on to a position at John Deere where he remained for 25 years, retiring in 1986. Raymond was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church since 1948.

Survivors include: five children, Colleen (Richard) Nolta of Brandon, Dennis McGuire of Portales, N.M., Kevin (Kandace) McGuire of Bradenton, Fla., Mary Sucre of Rome, GA, and Janet Udelhofen of Solon; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; a sister Joan Hill of Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister-in-law, Amalia McGuire of WoodBridge, Va.; a cousin, Maurice “Dutch” Harn of Waterloo and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in Death by: a sister Anna Belle Hundley; three brothers, Donald Hundley, William McGuire and Raleigh McGuire; a son-in-law, Alberto Sucre and a sister-in-law, Betty Hundley

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 13 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Full Military Rites will be conducted by the Iowa Army Honor Guard and the Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Public visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway. Visitation will continue for one hour before services at the Church on Friday.

Memorials may be directed to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Bert enjoyed participating in sports his entire life, excelling in most. In retirement, he and Eileen participated in many church activities and delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. During the winter, they enjoyed spending time at Gulf Shores Beach. In the later years when Eileen required extensive care, Bert was there for her.
