Obituary for Richard H. Sullivan

Richard H. “Sully” Sullivan, 83, of Waterloo, died Saturday, January 27, at Pinnacle Place, Cedar Falls.

He was born January 24, 1935 in Sommerville, Massachusetts, son of Timothy and Loretta Wright Sullivan. He married Marisa Kelly on November 26, 1955 in Elma.

Sully was employed with Rath Packing Company and later with Sears, retiring in 1996. He was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force. Sully loved his family with a passion. His pride in his grandchildren shined at all their activities. He had many friends from all walks of life and cherished his friendships made on the greens at South Hills golf course. Sully was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He actively participated in Christian Encounter Weekends, and led men’s retreats with his son Tim, at the Monastery in Peosta, Iowa. Throughout the years, Sully and Marisa, served Sacred Heart Parish in many capacities. Playing cards and time on the golf course were two of Sully’s favorite activities, family and friends were always involved. Sully and Marisa enjoyed winter trips to Gulf Shores, Alabama with Marisa’s twin sister Marita and her husband Dave.

Survivors include: his wife; a son, Tim Sullivan of Waterloo; a daughter, Kelly (Joe) Drahozal of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, John, Erin, Nick and Joey Drahozal; a brother, John Sullivan of Boston, Massachusetts; and a sister, MaryJane Lundy of Boston, Massachusetts.

Preceded in death by: two sisters, Alice Heffernan and Bobbie Foley.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Evansdale Amvets Post 31, Waterloo Amvets Post 19 and the U. S. Air Force Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation will continue at the church for an hour before services on Wednesday.
