Obituary for Robert F. Lichty

Robert Frank Lichty, 93, of Waterloo, died Thursday, April 26, at home.

Born on August 14, 1924 at St. Francis hospital in Waterloo, Bob was the second son of Robert James and Mildred Weis Lichty and a proud third generation Iowan. He attended East Middle School, West High School in Waterloo and in 1943 graduated from Shattuck Military Academy in Fairbault, MN. At Shattuck, Bob was a member of the crack squad, a precision rifle drill team, and was on the golf and swim teams. Bob studied engineering at Iowa State University and was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. In 1945, Bob joined the Navy and was stationed in San Diego, CA. After discharge he returned to the University of Iowa and graduated from the School of Business in 1948.

Bob graduated from the Hartford School of Insurance and began his business career working with his father at the Waterloo Insurance Agency. He owned and managed the Agency for 35 years until his retirement and was joined by partners Jack Peterson (deceased) and Bob Carney. Bob served as President of the Waterloo Association of Independent Insurance Agents and was a member of the Jonathan Trumbell Council of Professional Independent Insurance Agents.

Service to community was a core value and a legacy of the Lichty family. Bob helped to establish the Boys and Girls Club in Waterloo and served as President of the Board because he believed in providing opportunities to all children in the Waterloo area. He was president of the Minnie Crippen Home, served on the Finance Committee of the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa for seventeen years, and was on the Board of Sunnyside Country Club. Bob was a longtime member of the Kiwanis, Elks and Chamber of Commerce and has been recognized by the University of Northern Iowa, Shattuck Military Academy and Columbus High School for his generous support.

Bob Lichty was sustained in life by his family, friends and faith. He married his love and life-partner, Mary L. Lutgen on June 23, 1948. They shared devotion to their four children, many decades-long friendships and enjoyment of sport and travel throughout their long marriage.

An avid sportsman, Bob loved golf, hunting, fishing, skiing, and building and flying model airplanes. His great joy was sharing these activities with his children and grandchildren. Youthful efforts were often rewarded with Bob’s encouraging proclamation: “that’s the old fight!”

After family, Bob valued many long friendships with classmates, neighbors and colleagues. Bob will be fondly remembered by his lifelong friend, Dr. Gib Glasson as well as many who enjoyed the links with him at Sunnyside Country Club and Ironwood Country Club in Palm Desert, CA and hunting and fishing the fields and waters of Iowa and Canada.

As a charter member of St. Edward’s Church, Bob found joy in his faith and was comforted by prayer at the end of his life. Though he couldn’t really carry a tune, Bob enjoyed singing in the back row of the choir.

The Lichty Family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff from Western Home and Cedar Valley Hospice. They provided kind and compassionate care and were a great comfort to Bob.

Bob is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter Martha (David) Bloom of Ann Arbor, MI, daughter Bobbe Carney of Waterloo, daughter Amy (Phillip Walker) Lichty of Santa Monica, CA and son John (Micky) Lichty of Madison, WI; nine grandchildren, Alex Bloom of Ann Arbor, MI, Amy (Mac) Bloom Fowle of Rye, NY, Erin (Doug Campbell) Carney of Kansas City, KS, Shannon Carney of Chicago, IL, Emily (Dustin Stewart) Bloom of New York, NY, David (Anastasia Mori) Bloom of Washington, DC, Daniel (Jen) Clement of Redondo Beach, CA, Emelia Lichty of Madison, WI and Mary Katherine Lichty of Madison, WI and seven great-grandchildren; Jackson, Dillon and Charlotte Fowle, Daniel and Elsie Clement, Axelle Bloom and Evelyn Stewart.

He is preceded in death by his brother, Lt. John W. Lichty and his parents.
