Obituary for Willis Joseph McGee

Willis Joseph McGee, 91, of Overland Park, Kan., formerly of Raymond, died Friday, July 13 at the Heritage House in Overland Park.

He was born August 25, 1926 in Cresco, Iowa, son of Leo and Geneva Cummings McGee. He married Emma Jean Walton on September 4, 1948. She died October 29, 2009.

Willis was veteran of the United States Navy. After his service, he began farming with his wife near Raymond and became employed with Rath Packing Company, where he remained until the company’s liquidation in 1984.

Survivors include: a son, Francis “Fritz” (June) McGee of Cherokee, Okla.; two daughters, Diane Roberts of San Antonio, Texas and Jean (Vern) Baumhover of Olathe, Kan.; nine grandchildren, Matt, Amy, Michael, Stephanie, Will, Connor and Cameron and nine great-grandchildren, Garrett, Charlie, Joey, Jimmy, Henry, George, Annie, Benson and Maclan; three siblings, Geraldine (Francis) Ott of Denver, Iowa, Mildred (John) Ellingson of Rochester, Minn., and Lyola McGee of La Port City.

Preceded in death by: his wife; an infant daughter, Joan McGee; two sisters, Eileen Whalen and Dorothy Hovey; two brothers, Leo and Ron McGee and a son-in-law, Lloyd Roberts.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 17 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville where full military rites will be conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard and the Gilbertville American Legion Nugent Demuth Post 714. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco, Iowa. Public visitation will be one hour before services at the church. Their will be no evening visitation.

Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on 400 South Street is assisting the family.

Memorials may be directed to Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Raymond, Iowa.

His greatest joys in life were his family, farming and being able to send his children to college.
