Obituary for Edward A. Herold

Edward Arden Herold, 94, of Waterloo, died Monday, February 18, at Ravenwood Nursing & Rehab Center.

He was born July 3, 1924 in a farmhouse one mile East of Cresco, Iowa. He was the youngest son of Carl Edward Herold and Rose Emma Riehle Herold. He married Mary Anne Reams June 10, 1952 at St. Edward Catholic Church in Waterloo.. She died May 31, 2000. They had four children, a daughter and three sons.

Ed graduated from the Calmar High School in 1942. He served in the U. S. Military from 1944 to 1946 and was stationed in both the European Theater of Operations, United States Army and the South West Pacific Theatre of World War II. Eddie was employed as a welder at the Rath Packing Company for 37 years until the company closed in 1984. He was instrumental in employee efforts to re-organize the company. He later was a welder with various firms throughout the Midwest. Following retirement he started a firewood business to keep himself young. It worked for a very long time. His favorite part of the business was interacting with his customers.

He played semi-pro baseball for various local teams and was a life-long fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He loved fishing with his sons and grandsons, spending time with his daughter and granddaughters and the campfires and potlucks with his nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his daughter Janice Bebee (Danny) of Waterloo, and sons Paul (Nanette) of Phoenix Ariz., David (Linda) of Cedar Falls and Douglas (Roxanne) of Waterloo; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; a brother, Elmore Herold of Waterloo and a sister, Lillian Daughenbaugh of Downey, Calif..

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; brothers, Cletus (died in infancy), Cyril, and Wilfred; sisters Eunella Dempewolfe, Luella Burnikel, Ruth Ratkovich and Rose Harkness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 138, Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 1623 and the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 6:30 p.m. vigil service. Visitation will continue at the church for an hour before services on Saturday.

Memorials may be directed to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
