Life Journey of Mother Jannie Mae Smith

Mother Jannie Mae Smith 87, passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 in Waterloo, Iowa. She was born on June 15, 1931, in Tchula, Mississippi, the daughter of Charlie and Essie Smith. As a child she went to school in Tchula, MS before working full time with her parents on Horseshoe Plantation where they served as sharecroppers. After migrating north, she was employed as a domestic worker at the Holiday Inn and as caretaker for the late Ms. Velma Cleaver.

Jannie accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Blanicene Chapel Baptist Church in Tchula. She later moved her membership to Bethel Baptist Church where most of her family attended. When she and her family moved to the Waterloo, Iowa she joined Union Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Reverend Lonnie J. Jordan. As a devoted member she sang in the Pulpiteers and Gospelistic Choirs and subsequently was promoted to the Mothers Board where she served faithfully until illness prevented her from performing her duties. However, she prayed and praised her way through.

Jannie was an avid fisherman and she loved it too! She said being on the banks fishing was healing for her mind and body as she enjoyed the peaceful presence of God. She also enjoyed frying fish, and folks would eat it right out of the skillet where she seemed to produce an endless supply of golden fried fish. Family, friends and strangers ate at her table and loved her cooking, especially her delicious sweet potato pie.

She married George Horton in Waterloo, Iowa and they were later divorced. She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Ruthie (Estes) Lauer of Waterloo; five sons LC (Pastor Belinda), Joseph (Viola), Willie (Monique), Charles (Lisa), and Terry Smith all of Waterloo; one stepson, Tracy Wright; twenty-two grandchildren; sixty-two great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Henry D. and Robert Lee Smith; four brothers, Charlie, O.C, Willie and George Smith; and three sisters, Bertha Lee Miller, Maggie Mae Wright, a twin sister who died at birth and her firstborn grandson, Myron "Big Moe" Meador.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Union Missionary Baptist Church with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at our South Street location.
