Obituary for DeLores Mae Marlow

DeLores Mae (Drewis) Marlow, 89, formerly of Waterloo, IA died peacefully on April 17, 2018, at Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston, IA, surrounded by her family. DeLores was born in Tripoli, IA on January 14, 1929, daughter of the late Ernst and Emma (Kuhrt) Drewis.

DeLores graduated from Tripoli High School in 1947. Following graduation, DeLores moved to Waterloo and worked at Rath Packing Company, The James Black Co., and Hinson Manufacturing Company. She married John O. Marlow on June 14, 1953 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waterloo, IA, eventually leaving the workforce to devote her time to raising her six children. Shortly after John passed away on June 10, 1975, DeLores began providing in-home day care, and subsequently worked at St. Edward Elementary School as the “fruit lady” in the school cafeteria, where she retired in 2006. DeLores was a long-time member of St. Edward Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Eagles Lodge in Waterloo, IA. She enjoyed lunch and dinner with friends, playing bingo, watching sports particularly those involving her children and grandchildren (and the Bulls), cooking for Eagles’ potlucks, helping with funeral dinners at St. Edward Catholic Church, and working at the Knights of Columbus.

DeLores is survived by her six children, Stephen (Sharon) Marlow of West Des Moines, IA; Michael (Jeanne) Marlow of Johnston, IA; Mary (Jeff) Appleyard of Waukee, IA; Annette (Jim) Johnson of Waterloo, IA; Patricia “Tish” (Dwayne) Roach of Bakersfield, CA; and Philip (Andrea) Marlow of Grimes, IA. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren: Meredith (Justin) Peck, Tim (Abby) Marlow, Rachel Marlow, Zach Appleyard, Kelsey (Ryan) Carlstedt, Nathan (Kelli) Johnson, Lindsey Johnson, Kayla (Chad) Pendley, Johnny (Heather) Roach, Michael (Jennifer) Watson, Shannon Gomez, Cameron Roach, Megan (Charlie) Manning and Lauren Marlow; thirteen great-grandchildren: Charlotte Peck, Dean Peck, Lucia Marlow, Landon Johnson, Myla Johnson, KayLynn Seaman, Colton Pendley, Lexi Pendley, Lauren Roach, Rory Roach, Wesley Price, Saylar Gomez, and Walker Manning; two soon-to-be great-grandchildren: Baby Boy Carlstedt due in August and Baby Johnson due in September; and countless nieces, nephews and cousins.

DeLores was predeceased by her loving husband, John; five brothers: Roland Drewis, Randy Drewis, Ralph Drewis, Erwin “Red” Drewis, and Fredrick Drewis; and seven sisters: Norma Schroeder, Blanche Sievers, Ruth Drewis, Geneva Kerr, Jeanette Harris, Lois Hunt, and Dorothy Harris.

DeLores’ family would like to thank the staff of Bishop Drumm Care Center, where DeLores spent the last four years, who provided physical and spiritual care to her. DeLores enjoyed daily mass at Bishop Drumm, and the interaction with the residents and staff whether it be in daily activities, meals, or one-on-one conversations.
